Royal Doulton | Vintage Fireclay Basin | 1950s Institutional Classic

Own a piece of regional history with this genuine vintage fireclay basin by Royal Doulton. Reclaimed from the historic Powick Hospital during its mid-century refurbishment, this basin dates specifically to the 1950s. Built to withstand the rigours of a busy hospital environment, it is crafted from heavy-duty fireclay—a material far denser and more impact-resistant than standard vitreous china.

Industrial Strength & Period Design

Fireclay was the material of choice for 20th-century public buildings, factories, and hospitals because of its incredible longevity.

  • Traditional 2-Tap Hole Layout: Designed for separate hot and cold pillar taps, offering an authentic mid-century look.

  • Wall-Mounted Installation: This substantial basin is supported by heavy-duty wall brackets (not included), creating a clean, “floating” look that is ideal for rustic pubs, restaurants, or traditional residential bathrooms.

  • Generous Dimensions: With a 55cm width and a deep bowl, it provides ample space for practical, everyday use.

Character & Condition

As a genuine reclaimed item with a story to tell, this basin carries a unique patina of age:

  • Authentic Patina: There are a couple of small chips on the basin and a very faint, historic hairline crack on the exterior.

  • Structural Integrity: Because it is made of fireclay, these minor cosmetic marks have no risk of spreading and do not affect the basin’s watertight performance. When installed, these marks are virtually unnoticeable and only add to its vintage charm.

Why Choose a Fireclay Basin?

If you are looking for a “workhorse” sink that doubles as a conversation piece, this vintage fireclay basin is the perfect fit. Its weight and thickness provide a tactile sense of quality that modern reproductions lack. It is a particularly good match for “industrial-chic” interiors or heritage properties where only original, period-correct materials will suffice.

Delivery & Collection

Due to the significant weight of the fireclay construction, collection from our workshop is preferred. However, we can arrange specialised delivery at an extra cost using reinforced, high-protection packaging to ensure your Royal Doulton find arrives safely.
